Great start for Martin in Denmark

Martin Öhlin got off to a really good start when Carrera Cup Scandinavia kicked off the season at Jyllandsringen in Denmark.

While several of his fellow competitors have tested on the track pre-season Martin drove his first laps around the twisty circuit in the 20 minute long practice session Saturday morning. He was an impressive third fastest in the session just before qualifying. In qualifying he posted fifth fastest time and a fifth place on the grid in race one.
– I hink it was pretty good, Martin said after qualifying. Maybe I could have squeezed out a bit more time but we are taking it safe this weekend and aim to get some good points onboard. Fifth is actually better than fourth, now we have the inside line.

A position Martin made the best of in the start, he got a good start and could immediately climb two places and head third into the first corner. He defended the position in the first part of the race and could then get a small gap towards the end and secure the first podium for the season.
– The start was perhaps not perfect but it was more than enough, Martin said. I had a good fight with Mangs after that and third place is a great start to the season. Everything was under control, we did as planned and drove safe and solid. This feels really good.

The second race went even better. Martin now started third on the grid thanks to posting the third fastest time in the first race. He once again got a great start and jumped one place to be second into the first corner. Once again he could fend off any challenges and had no problems keeping second place from start to finish.
– Once again I did a good start. The plan was to try and steal second place and after that I was in control the whole race. I had a good pace and got a gap that was enough for me to drive my own lines and not having to defend.

Two podiums from the first two races despite not having seen the track before the weekend is a result Martin Öhlin is more than happy with.
– It’s simply great, he said. Two podiums is more than I hoped for myself before this weekend. Everyone in the team has done a really great job with the car and this feels real nice. We are off to a good start.

This was also Martin’s first weekend together with WestCoast Racing. Team manager Dick Jönsson-Wigroth was impressed with their first weekend together with Martin Öhlin in Carrera Cup Scandinavia.
– I think it’s really good with Martin, he said. We have not been here and tested before the season and Martin did the most of the situation. Two podiums is fantastic and now we are really looking forward to Knutstorp.

Martin Öhlin now lies second in the championship after the first two races. The next race weekend is at Ring Knutstorp in May 7th – 8th.
